MOODY GARDENS GOLF COURSE RANKED AMONG BEST NEW REMODELED COURSES IN NATION
Galveston Island, Texas (January 2010) – The Moody Gardens Golf Course was recently named one of the best golf course remodels with rates less than $65 in the country. The result was released by Golf Digest, the nation’s leading golf magazine, in its January 2010 issue.
“It’s a true honor to be recognized by Golf Digest,” said Bill Pushak, general manager of the Moody Gardens Golf Course. “We continue to strive to offer a top-quality golfing experience at an affordable fee.”
The Moody Gardens Golf Course first opened to the public in June, 2008 after two years and more than $16 million in comprehensive renovations to the former Galveston Municipal Golf Course. The renovations included a larger practice range, green complexes, irrigation, drainage, cart paths, greens and a full clubhouse renovation. Among the key changes, renowned golf course architects Jacobsen Hardy Golf Course Design replaced Bermuda grass with salt-tolerant paspalum grass and elevated the course by two to five feet. To keep playing surfaces in the top condition, a new water treatment plant and an irrigation system were included in the renovation project.
These efforts quickly paid off, when the course was faced with Hurricane Ike and made remarkably fast recovery a month later. The course was also named the best renovation and most improved course by the Houston edition of AvidGolfer in 2008.
Still, the renovated par-72 premiere public golf course retains the seaside tropical feel since the days of the municipal course with lakes and nearly 500 palm trees. Measuring 6,900 yards from the back tees, the golf course is designed to be player-friendly, with five sets of tees to accommodate varying playing abilities.
The multi-million dollar investment is a contribution to the city on the part of Moody Gardens and the culmination of the vision to provide a first-class public golf course for local residents and visitors to the island. The City of Galveston continues to retain ownership of the newly renovated facility, which is managed by Moody Gardens.
