|Life Support Operator|
The Life Support Systems Operator position consists of routine operation of life support systems, minor maintenance of life support and exhibit enhancement systems, routine maintenance of equipment in animal support and life support areas; assisting Biologist with assigned projects. POSITION AUTHORITY: The incumbent is authorized to take reasonable action necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities, provided such action is consistent with position guidelines as outlined below or through reasonable assent present within this position. POSITION GUIDELINES: Position guidelines include, but are not limited to, established company and department policies and procedures and all supervisory directives. The incumbent is expected to exercise sound, reasonable judgment and initiative in the performance of job responsibilities. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Life Support Systems Operations •Perform filter backwashes on exhibit systems as required •Perform water reclamation on systems after backwash •Perform minor maintenance and repairs of life support equipment Exhibit Enhancement Systems •Perform minor maintenance and repairs on exhibit enhancement systems; i.e. fog machines, waterfall pumps, etc. Equipment Maintenance •Perform minor maintenance and repairs on equipment in animal support areas •Perform minor maintenance and repairs on other equipment in life support areas Technical Assistance •Assist Biologist with technical assistance on special projects; i.e. plumbing, light construction and minor exhibitory fabrication Communication •Keep Curator or Assigned Supervisor informed on exhibit backwash schedules, status of exhibit backwashes and status of water reclamation. •Keep Biologist Supervisor, Assistant Curator and General Curator informed regarding problems with life support systems, exhibit enhancement systems and other equipment in animal support and life support areas. •Coordinate preventative maintenance of equipment with Maintenance Department. •Inform maintenance department if major repairs are required on life support, exhibit enhancement and other equipment. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Must possess High School diploma or equivalent. Basic working knowledge of pumps and motors; basic mechanical; carpentry, electrical and plumbing skills. Must be organized, self-motivated, with a desire to see projects through to completion. Must have valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and provide proof of insurance. Must be observant and able to work with others as part of a team. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work in water, both man-made and natural, temperatures ranging upwards from 55º. Heavy lifting (greater than 50 pounds on occasion), walking and working within a wet environment. Outdoor work on occasion, under a variety of conditions: cold weather, hot weather, rain, mud, ocean environments and dry land. Availability for overtime both emergency and non-emergency situations; on call 24 hours a day.
