Moody Gardens® Explores the Depths of Four Oceans of the World

05/08/2007

GALVESTON, TX… At the Houston area’s number one tourist attraction and family destination guests can dive into the depths of four oceans of the world by exploring the complex beauty and seemingly endless species of marine life of the North Pacific, South Pacific, South Atlantic and Caribbean at the Aquarium Pyramid® at Moody Gardens®.

Tide pools, jewel tanks and a variety of unique viewing opportunities submerse visitors in the vivid beauty and ornate complexity of the oceans of the world while providing underwater classrooms and learning experiences for guests of all ages.

“Divided into regions corresponding to the points on a compass, the aquarium’s giant glass viewing areas display the cold waters of the North Pacific, the South Pacific’s Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea, the frigid environment of the South Atlantic on the edge of the Antarctic and the warm, tropical Caribbean,” said Greg Whittaker, animal husbandry manager at Moody Gardens®. “With an investment of $50 million and encompassing 130,000 square feet, 1.5 million gallons of water and more than 10,000 marine animals, the Aquarium Pyramid® at Moody Gardens® allows visitors to explore four oceans of the world without getting wet,” he said.

The beautiful 10-story, blue-glass pyramid of the aquarium is the perfect addition to the 10-story clear-glass pyramid of the Rainforest and the delicate rose glass of the Discovery Pyramid. Built on two viewing levels, guests stroll up and down walkways to experience the exhibits from above and below the water’s surface.

In the North Pacific exhibit, guests observe playful seals as they frolic on the rocky shores and dive below the surface of the cold, pristine water. Guests then journey to the depths of the South pacific, to the beautiful coral reef and its many colorful fishes. Here

visitors come face-to-face with more than 200 species of fish native to that beautiful area.

King Penguins keep guests occupied for hours as they play in the frigid South Atlantic exhibit. This true-to-life exhibit is patterned closely on the rocky beaches of South Georgia Island, the birds’ native habitat. The giant windows below the ice sheet allow visitors to view the penguins in their environment.

Guests end their marine journey in the Caribbean exhibit, which offers an exciting one-million-gallon walk-through experience that gives guests the sense of diving with sharks, reef fishes, snappers, eels, seabasses and other marine life.

“The most important missions of the Aquarium Pyramid® at Moody Gardens® are scientific research and education,” said Prappas. “Our aquarium is unique in its offering of extraordinary underwater views, touch tanks, tide pools and guest-to-diver communications to create the ultimate underwater classroom.”
