Volunteer Program Specialist
Education - Attractions
The Volunteer Program Specialist oversees the supervision, training and evaluation of volunteers and programs. POSITION AUTHORITY: The incumbent is authorized to take reasonable action necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities, provided such action is consistent with position guidelines as outlined below. POSITION GUIDELINES: Position guidelines include, but are not limited to, established company and department policies and procedures and all supervisory directives. The incumbent is expected to exercise sound, reasonable judgment and initiative, and give high priority to accuracy and details in the performance of job responsibilities. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: •Manage the volunteer programs at Moody Gardens, including adult, youth, corporate, unpaid intern and employee programs •Actively recruit, interview and evaluate volunteers •Conduct training and orientation sessions for volunteers •Develop and continuously update volunteer training materials with the collaboration of the Senior Education Specialist and Education Curator •Create monthly emails/newsletter for volunteers •Maintain volunteer database (Volgistics) and all files; accurate reporting on volunteer hours for all adult, youth, corporate, intern and employee programs •Maintain volunteer supplies, uniforms and program items •Act as liaison with other departments to assess their intern & volunteer needs •Coordinate volunteers with other departments •Coordinate annual Hope Therapy events •Coordinate annual Volunteer Banquet and any other volunteer sponsored event •Coordinate continuing education classes for all volunteers •Actively utilize volunteers as assistants and program leads for annual events, special programs and general daily projects •Responsible for volunteer participants and enforcing Moody Gardens’ policies and procedures; documenting incidents and disciplinary actions as needed with oversite from the Education Curator. •Assist the Youth Program Specialist with the SAVY youth program •Assist the Education Curator with the Friends of Moody Gardens by logging volunteer hours and other FOMG events or projects as assigned •Collaborate with the Naturalist Supervisor, Education Specialists or Education Curator with education volunteers on interpretive station schedules and special programs •Maintain and submit updates for volunteer information on website •Travel to schools, area businesses, conferences and community events for volunteer recruitment opportunities as assigned •Assume Department Manager on Duty responsibilities as assigned •Attend scheduled meetings •Process mail, maintain reports, travel requests and other necessary paperwork •Provide positive guest experiences by initiating interactions and answering questions •Be cleared to work with Ambassador Animals and attend review courses as needed •Staff interpretive stations in the Rainforest Pyramid, Aquarium Pyramid, Discovery Museum and other education programs or tours as assigned •Any and all other duties as assigned; duties are subject to change as management deems necessary to best serve the needs of Moody Gardens EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: •High School diploma or equivalent required •College degree or work experience in related field preferred •Prior supervisory and event planning experience preferred REQUIRED SKILLS: •Must be reliable and responsible •Strong supervisory and leadership skills •Strong interpersonal and organizational skills •Strong verbal communication and public speaking skills •Excellent customer service skills •Proficiency with computer word processing, spreadsheets and databases •Ability to retain large quantities of information •Ability to handle multiple projects with competing deadlines •Flexibility with scheduling; including weekends & holidays •Professional appearance •Ability to work around and with animals •Must have a valid Texas Driver’s License PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: •Sufficient endurance to spend long periods of time (50% or more) in a stationary position conducting programs or staffing exhibit areas •Sufficient mobility to spend long periods of time (50% or more) traversing on tour or conducting programs •Ability to tolerate multiple climate change exposures throughout work habitat environments which include high humidity, heat, cold and outdoor conditions on a repetitive rotating schedule •Ability to maneuver up to 50 pounds
