Job Detail
Veterinary Technician
Life Science Exhibits Attracctions
Job responsibilities include implementation of veterinary directives; daily communication with Veterinarian and Curators; staff training of leads for approved diagnostic sampling and treatment procedures; assist Laboratory Manager in maintaining working stock of necessary supplies; perform pathological examinations of fish, marine mammals, and birds as directed by Veterinarian, Curators and Animal Husbandry Manager. Coordinate with and assist the Animal Husbandry Manager and Curator as needed.
The incumbent is authorized to take reasonable action necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities, provided such action is consistent with position guidelines as outlined below.
Position guidelines include, but are not limited to, established company and department policies and procedures and all supervisory directives. The incumbent is expected to exercise sound, reasonable judgment and initiative, and give high priority to accuracy and details in the performance of job responsibilities. 
Animal Husbandry
•Work closely with Veterinarian (Vet), Curator and Animal Husbandry Manager (AHM) to develop Veterinary Care Program
•Perform biological sampling, sample preparation, laboratory diagnostics, and approved veterinary procedures as directed by Vet, Curators, and AHM
•Work closely with Vet, Curators and AHM to develop and implement preventative medicine program
•Work closely with Curators and area leads to facilitate non-invasive, voluntary sampling protocol for preventative medicine program
•Work closely with Vet, Curators and AHM to develop and implement staff professional development program to accomplish facility-wide animal emergency protocol
Department Management
•Develop, schedule and supervise preventative maintenance routines for all life support equipment
•Maintain maintenance records
•Develop a parts inventory and maintain stock
•Scheduling and Supervision of staff members
•Coordination between LSS Department, Maintenance Department and Biology staff
•Plan and implement long and short term goals for department
•Maintain knowledge of industry innovations and new techniques
Supervision of Personnel
•Prepare and conduct employee performance evaluations for departmental staff
Facility Maintenance
•Perform maintenance and repairs on equipment in animal support areas
•Perform maintenance and repairs on other equipment in life support areas
•Perform minor maintenance and repairs on exhibit enhancement systems, i.e. for machines, waterfall pumps, etc.
Technical Assistance
•Assist Biologist with technical assistance on special projects; i.e. plumbing, light construction and minor exhibitory fabrication
•Any and all other duties as assigned; duties are subject to change as management deems necessary to best serve the needs of Moody Gardens
•High School diploma required
•Bachelor’s degree in biological field preferred
•A minimum of 3 years of Aquarium Life Support experience is required and equivalent experience in a related filed will be considered
•Must have valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and provide proof of insurance
•Must be observant and able to work with other employees in a polite, patient manner
•Must be reliable and responsible
•Good understanding of the biological ramifications of water movement. Good understanding of ozone systems and treatment
•Strong organizational skills
•Proficient computer skills
•Working knowledge of Allen-Bradley automated systems, FIX automation software, and ladder-logic is a plus
•Good working knowledge of pumps, motors and valves. God mechanical, carpentry, electrical and plumbing skills
•Must be organized, self-motivated, with a desire to see projects through to completion
•Availability for overtime, both non-emergency and emergency situations- on Call 24/7
•Ability to work in water, both man-made and natural
•Ability to lift 50 pounds or more
•Ability to work in all weather extremes
•Ability to remain on feet standing or walking in a wet environment for long periods of time
