April 20, 2026

Moody Gardens Golf Course is proud to offer Galveston Island's only public, dedicated pickleball facility. Learn everything you need to know — court hours, pricing, equipment rentals, rules for beginners, and how to plan your visit.

Pickleball Has Arrived at Moody Gardens — Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States, and now Galveston Island has its own dedicated place to play. Galveston Island Pickleball at Moody Gardens Golf Course brings four outdoor courts to one of the Gulf Coast’s most beloved destinations. Whether you’ve never held a paddle or you play several times a week, this guide covers everything you need to plan your visit and get on the court.

What Is Pickleball? A Quick Intro for New Players

If you’re new to the sport, here’s the short version: pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It’s played on a court roughly a quarter the size of a tennis court, with a low net, a plastic wiffle-style ball, and solid paddles.

The game is easy to learn, low-impact on your joints, and genuinely fun from the very first rally. That’s a big reason why it has exploded in popularity across all age groups. You don’t need to be athletic to enjoy it, but the more you play, the more strategy and skill come into the picture.

Basic Pickleball Rules to Know Before You Play

  • Scoring: Games are typically played to 11 points, and you must win by 2. Only the serving team can score a point.
  • The Kitchen: The area within 7 feet of the net on each side is called the non-volley zone, or “the kitchen.” You cannot volley (hit the ball in the air) while standing in this zone.
  • The Double-Bounce Rule: After a serve, each team must let the ball bounce once before hitting it. After those two bounces, volleys are allowed.
  • Serving: Serves are hit underhand, diagonally cross-court, and must clear the kitchen.
  • Faults: Hitting the ball out of bounds, into the net, or volleying from the kitchen results in a fault and loss of serve or point.

That’s the core of it. Most beginners are rallying comfortably within the first 15 minutes. It’s that accessible.

Tips for Your First Visit

If you’re new to pickleball or just new to these courts, here are a few things that will help you have a great experience:

  • Wear court shoes. Athletic shoes with non-marking soles are ideal. Running shoes work fine — just avoid flip-flops or sandals.
  • Dress for the Gulf Coast heat. Galveston can be warm and humid. Light, breathable clothing, sunscreen, and a hat will go a long way.
  • Bring water. Staying hydrated on the court is important, especially during summer months. Beverages are also available from Pelican Grille.
  • Start with doubles. If you’re learning, four-player doubles is the easiest and most social way to get started. It keeps the rallies shorter and the fun high.
  • Don’t be intimidated. Pickleball has a reputation for being one of the friendliest sports communities around. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned player, the courts are a welcoming place.
